Tips to Make Mermaid or Unicorn Bath Bomb Cupcakes
- Be sure to let your cupcake bath bombs to dry fully before using them, because they’ll be fizzier. Generally, I recommend letting them dry for at least 24 hours or more if you live in a humid environment or it’s cold out.
- Always store your DIY bath bomb cupcakes in an airtight container until you’re ready to drop them in the tub. The moisture in the air can make them significantly less fizzy. One thing I like to do is store my bath bombs in a pretty air-tight container like an apothecary jar. Not only is this great for keeping the bath bombs ready-to-use, but it’s a really cute packaging if you plan to gift them!

How Do I Make Cupcake Bath Bombs?
I’m so glad you asked. Below is our written tutorial.
Cupcake Bath Bombs
These are the funnest cupcake bath bombs you'll find. Bubbly, fizzy and just straight-up awesome, you can make them into mermaid bath bomb cupcakes or unicorn bath bomb cupcakes with just a couple of tweaks!
Materials
Bath Bomb Cupcakes
- 1 1/2 cups baking soda
- 1 cup citric acid (I like to buy in bulk on Amazon)
- 1/2 cup cornstarch
- 1/4 cup white Kaolin Clay (Find it on Amazon)
- 1/4 cup dead sea salts (Find it on Amazon)
- 1/4 cup coconut oil (Find it on Amazon)
- 2 teaspoons polysorbate 80 (Find it on Amazon)
- 1-2 drops of scented oil (I used "Rain" scent)
- 2-3 drops purple food colorant for Unicorn Bath Bombs or blue for Mermaid Bath Bombs
- SprinklesÂ
Whipped Topping
- 1/4 cup clear or white melt and pour soap base (Find it on Amazon)
- 1 tablespoon glycerin (Find it on Amazon)
- 1 tablespoon corn starch
- 3/4 cup whipped soap base (Find it on Amazon)
- 2-3 drops each of pink, yellow and light green soap colorant for Unicorn Bath Bombs or pink, blue and purple for Mermaid Bath BombsÂ
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the baking soda, citric acid and cornstarch.
- Add the coconut oil, Polysorbate 80 and scented oil then mix well. You may need to use your hands to crush lumps and make sure everything gets well mixed. The mixture is ready when it holds together like wet sand when you press it together in your hands.
- Add in your color. Start with 1-2 drops of color and mix it in. If you want a darker color, add 1-2 more drops at a time, mixing between.
- Fill each cavity of a muffin tin and press mixture into it firmly until the cavity is filled to the top.
- Allow the cupcake bath bombs to dry a minimum of 24 hours. If your climate is wet or cold, allow an additional 24 hours. My rule of thumb is that when it is hard to the touch, they are ready for the frosting! To remove from a metal muffin tin, gently run a knife around the outer edge and release.
- To make the whipped topping, combine whipped soap base, scented oil and glycerin and mix on low speed until fluffy.
- Melt the soap base in 30-second increments, stirring between each increment, until the soap is melted. Then allow the soap to cool for about a minute.
- Combine melted soap base and cornstarch on high speed for 1 minute or until it forms stiff peaks like a meringue. If the frosting is not stiff, add additional cornstarch.
- Divide the whipped soap mixture into 3 small mixing bowls and add one color to each bowl. Mix until the color is consistent throughout then place in the frosting bags.
- Frost cupcake bombs as with an edible cupcake. Add a few sprinkles on top. Allow to dry for 2-3 days then enjoy!
