This absolutely beautiful and adorable butterfly gnome pattern is just the best DIY spring gnome perfect for Mother’s Day or just to brighten your day!

I’ve used a single package of craft store butterflies on one of the best-selling Ruffles and Rain Boots gnome patterns, but please note that you can use ANY gnome body style. Let’s get started with this cutie.

Butterfly Gnome Pattern

Here at Ruffles and Rain Boots, I LOVE making gnomes for spring. The shades of pastels, flowers, and light-colored beards makes me smile and refresh my decor after the darkness of a Seattle winter. When I remembered I had my little wheelbarrow and found some butterflies – a lightbulb moment hit me: spring + butterflies = gnome.

There was no way was I passing this opportunity up and I was already on the path of making Mother’s Day gnomes this year. I am using an easy-to-make gnome pattern I created, however, you can use a sock gnome or even a cone gnome base for this one.

Tips to Make This DIY Spring Gnome

  • The printable pattern for the wild gnome is here. This fun DIY spring gnome is featured in this pattern set in no-sew and sewn options – but there are SIX MORE gnomes that you can make with the same pattern.
  • Within this pattern, there are variations for a mushroom gnome, a succulent gnome, a pine cone gnome, a moss hat gnome, and a flower gnome along with the butterfly gnome (all included in a single pattern).
  • If making all these tiny cuts isn’t your thing, or if you would like to batch-out the cutting when making a ton of gnomes, you can grab the Wild Gnome Pattern with cut files for Cricut or Silhouette.
  • The little butterflies I used are readily available at the craft stores, too, but I found (after I made my butterfly gnome, of course) this cute set of really inexpensive butterflies that are perfect for adding to your spring gnome!
  • I found my little decorative metal wheelbarrow at the craft store last year – and wasn’t sure what I would use it for.

Make a Butterfly Gnome Pattern?

Below is the written and printable tutorial with step by step instructions to make this Scandinavian gnome (between 5 and 7 inches tall) – read through it and let me know if you have any questions. You can ask them here or in the Facebook group here – I’d love to have you as part of the community.

You can glue both the body and gnome hat of this gnome pattern (it is both a hot glue and a gnome sewing pattern). You also don’t have to use all of the pattern pieces and can even mix and match this with other Ruffles and Rain Boots patterns.

I can't tell you how FAST making this butterfly gnome is! Super quick DIY spring gnome and really adorable, I love knowing I can make a gnome both sewn or no-sew. Flexibility in crafting at it's finest. LOL!

Materials

Tools

  • Hot Glue Gun & Glue
  • Scissors
  • Razor Blade or Craft Knife
  • Funnel
  • Pencil or Fabric Marker, optional

Instructions

  • Cut the body shape from the fleece fabric and fold it in half right-side to right-side. Hot glue the two tabs together and allow the glue to cool completely.
  • Alight two of the three curved bumps on the top of the gnome and hot glue ONE SIDE of the two aligned curved bumps together, meaning hot glue the two bumps together from the topmost point to the base only on 1/2 of the bump.
  • Hot glue the base onto the bottom of the body shape. Allow the glue to cool completely.
  • Turn the body right side out and fill about halfway full with Poly Beads, stuffing the remaining portion of the body with Poly Fill. Hot glue hem the top closed by pinching the open bumps together, with hot glue between them. Allow the hot glue to cool completely.
  • Place your faux fur face down and, using your razor blade or craft knife, cut the fabric backing only into the shape you want for the beard. Hot glue the beard onto the front of the gnome. Allow the hot glue to cool completely. photo collage tutorial of how to make a butterfly gnome
  • Part the beard fur to the fabric about 1/2 inch below the top of the beard. Add a fair amount of hot glue then place the nose on top. Allow the hot glue to cool completely.
  • To make the hat, cut one cone hat shape from the fleece fabric and fold it in half, right-side to right-side. Hot glue the two sides together. Allow the hot glue to cool completely.
  • Turn the hat right side out, using a pencil or end of a paint brush to push out the tip. Fill the hat with a little Poly Fill - just enough to help hold the hat shape up and bear the weight of the butterflies.
  • Place the hat onto the gnome's head, tucking the hat over his nose in a cute wrinkle. Hot glue this in place. Hot glue the back of the hat in place, pulling it low to open up the face and add character. If you plan to add arms do so now.
  • Trim the wires on the butterflies to about 2-inches long and bend them perpendicular to the butterfly's body. Work the butterfly wires into the hat in random locations.
  • You can display the gnome as-is or you can make the little wheelbarrow stand by adding floral foam to a tiny wheelbarrow and covering it with moss, adding a matching faux floral stem to the brim, and setting the butterfly gnome on top. photo collage tutorial of how to make a gnome with a butterfly hat
