Make a Gorgeous Angel Gnome with Wings

Here at Ruffles and Rain Boots, I’m full of the holiday spirit and want to pass on a little bit of help for your holiday crafting. For years, people have asked for an angel gnome but I kept putting it off…

The gnome wasn’t the problem, you see – it was the angel wings! I kept trying to mess about with feathers. I tried three different styles of feathers and all of them were a gloopy, gloppy mess!

I finally figured it out and thought I would share a free pattern to help you do the same. Let’s get started.

Tips to Make This Angel Gnome

  • You will the Scandinavian Sweeties pattern (the top-selling gnome pattern from Ruffles and Rain Boots).
  • Download these free angel wing templates, as well. Choose whichever one you want to try first.
  • Really try to source the right material: plush fur from a fabric store, mufflers from the Dollar Tree, or even dusters will work! Just make sure it keeps its shape when you cut the backing.
  • Take care not to get any hot glue in the ‘feathers’ of the wings – it will be a bear to get out (you might have to cut it out).

How Do I Make an Angel Gnome?

I’m so glad you asked! Below is my written, printable tutorial (just hit that print button and either send it to your printer or save it as a digital file). Please note that you can find the full DIY angel gnome tutorial on my YouTube channel here.

First, cut the pattern pieces. In this pattern, I am using the hat, body, base, arms, and tie-top mittens.

Trace the desired angel wing template onto a light cardboard. Sew the gnome per the pattern instructions. Please see the full video tutorial for tips if you are new to sewing, as I share a few beginner sewing tips. Turn all pieces right-sides out (I used a bamboo skewer to help with the arms).

Add the Poly Beads into the base of the completed gnome body and tamp down. Add the wire for a bendable body/hat, if using, taking care to bend over the ends.

Stuff the gnome body with Poly-Fill and sew the body closed (can use a hot glue to seal the opening). Make sure to grab the wire into that seal if using.

Slide the mittens onto the arms and secure them with hot glue. Pin into place on the body and slip on the hat to determine your desired beard size and position.

Cut and affix the beard, pulling it up under the hat to hide the top. Split the fur to the fabric backing and secure the nose which a generous portion of hot glue.

Determine if the gnome will hold anything to judge where to glue the arms down and secure with hot glue. Affix the decoration between the hands and secure down the hat, using hot glue to seal it onto the bridge of the gnome nose and all the way around the sides and back of the gnome body.

Trace the angel wing shape onto the cardboard and cut out.

Trace the shape onto the back of the minky or plush fur fabric TWICE. Cut out with an Exacto or razor blade to ensure you only cut the fabric backing of the material. Remove any sheds from both pieces of the angel wings.

Use hot glue to secure each of the fur angel wings to each side of the cardboard cut out. Trim the center of the fur where the wings will be attached to the gnome body very closely so that you can hot glue them in place.
