Coconut Tree Craft Chicka Chicka ABC

Coconut Tree Craft for Kids

We love to craft here at Ruffles and Rain Boots, and it seems we have a lot of books which could use a palm tree or coconut tree as a prop for our learning activities. Books like Chicka Chicka ABC, books about the beach and sea life, pirate books… The list goes on.

I had to help the 2-year-old with this craft, but a preschooler would be able to do it on their own. Let’s get started with this fun tree craft!

Supplies for a Coconut Tree Craft

To make one of these little guys, you will need the following:

  • green and brown construction paper
  • crayons (different shades of greens)
  • craft cone (we used a Styrofoam cone)
  • glue and tape
  • pipe cleaners (if you want bendable leaves)
  • rubber bands (optional)

Here are the steps we took to make this palm tree craft. It was really easy, even for the 2-year-old!

  1. Color the green construction paper. Let them tear pieces of the brown construction paper to work on those fine motor skills!
  2. To help the youngest ones (mine was 2), I wrapped a scrap piece of brown paper around the cone because I wasn’t sure of the interest it would have. Then, I let her glue on her scraps to the cone.
  3. Next, we made the leaves. Depending on the ages of kids, you might have to cut out leaves or let them do it on their own. Fold the paper and cut out a leaf shape, leaving the top together. Cut notches through both layers.
  4. For bendable leaves, we cut pipe cleaners in half and taped them to the back of the leaves. We also added glue and then folded the leaves over to hide the pipe cleaner stem.
  5. To attach the leaves to the tree base, we stuck the end of the pipe cleaner into the top of the cone. For a couple, I needed to use a pencil to get the hole started.

How to Use This Fun Tree Craft for Kids

As I mentioned above, we’ve been able to use this in quite a few book-related crafts. One of our favorites was this Chicka Chicka Boom Boom alphabet play.

But books aren’t the only way you can have fun with this coconut tree craft for kids. I set up a fun treasure hunt for toddlers with it and the kids absolutely went bananas for it!
