How to Make Custom Magnets

I promise I didn’t take a job writing for Hallmark, but here at Ruffles and Rain Boots, I have been thinking of a few new ways to dote on those you care for. They are gifts perfect for birthdays, “thinking of you” moments, or even to show your appreciation for a teacher, a child care provider, a co-worker. These would also be perfect to gift to a recent graduate moving out on their own.

This one I’ve come up with is about $3.00 to put together, took 5 minutes, and can be presented in so many ways. I’m even offering you two free printables along with a tutorial to get your creative juices flowing.

This pyramid card is so easy to make – just fold the card stock around each magnet with a small border and secure with a glue dot before decorating.

Why Make DIY Magnets?

I get it… It’s not a very digital craft for our times, is it? But do you remember being a kid and falling into a memory of a trip just by getting a cold drink from the fridge? I sure do.

Once can be instantly returned to recall the sandy beaches of a family vacation or spur a laugh followed by the sharing of a funny story or inside joke. My goodness, fridge magnets can even let you in on (and become part of) a family tradition.

Custom magnets are a fun, simple, and inexpensive gift. In this tutorial, I’ll share how simple they are to put together without any fancy machines. Throughout this piece, I’ll also share a few ways we have gifted them (these are just quick shots of completed projects).

Who Could Use Their Own DIY Custom Made Magnets?

A few ways you could create and gift magnets are for friends, office mates, teachers, child care providers, your children, and their friends. Honestly, this is such a fun DIY project, the teens and tweens kept making them after I shared how.

And if teens and tweens want to continue making crafts, I’m all for letting them at it.

Isn’t this trifold card so cute? The magnets can be any size or shape – just fold the card stock to fit.

Supplies for DIY Magnets

The items you need for this project are really simple and can be found at any office store (or craft store). Honestly, check your stash because you might have everything you need except the magnets.

You do NOT have to use photo paper as I have, however, if you use regular card stock, be sure to give it a coat or two of ModPodge in order to seal in the ink. I actually love the photo paper because it adds a lot of depth to a flat magnet.

How to Make Custom Magnets in 5 Minutes

Step 1: Print out the design on photo paper. Set aside to dry fully.

Step 2: Cut out the design with a straight paper cutter or scissors. If using scissors, it might help to identify where you’re cutting with a light pencil line or even an indentation.

Use a paper trimmer to cut a clean design for a custom magnet.
Try to keep cuts as straight as you can.

Step 3: Lift up a bit of the magnet’s adhesive protector sheet (on the front of the magnet) about 1/3 of the way. Line up the design print and press it down, making sure there are no bubbles or creases until the entire magnet is covered. If you have a little hang off, don’t worry – we’ll get to that next.

Step 4: Flip the magnet over and use sharp scissors to trim away any excess paper. You’re done!

As I mentioned, the kids (young and ahem, much older) had fun making these. We “guerilla gifted” quite a few of them in the neighborhood in a hilarious ding dong dash style. I really appreciate you being here with me today.
