Paper Flower Lei for Moana Movie Night or Party

This paper flower lei was perfect (and surprisingly easy to put together) without a cutting machine! We used a paper flower lei template and it was a great addition to our family movie night.

In 2012, I made a paper flower mobile for my daughter. More accurately, I *started* to make a paper flower mobile for my daughter. I made sooooo many paper flowers to see which ones I liked.

And by the time I decided on the right flowers, I was SICK AND TIRED of making paper flowers.

So when the little one wanted to craft for our Moana movie night, she suggested making leis and it brought it all back. But I sucked it up, found simple flower templates, and this beautiful paper flower lei was formed.

Supplies and Paper Templates

This is ridiculously simple, friends. All you need is colored paper – it doesn’t even have to be cardstock! We used pastel copy paper and our lei still looks great (3 weeks later).

  • Printed flower templates – we printed a few sheets
  • Jute, string, or yarn
  • Plastic needle or large darning needle
  • Plastic straws or beads as dividers

Instructions for a Quick Paper Flower Lei

Print the template and follow the directions. We only used one type of flowers, but there are many in her template. We did use both the leaf types.

One tip – if little kids (6-ish) are making these, don’t cut the tri-tip leaf form via the template – leave a bit in the middle so it will be easier for them to thread it through the needle. You’ll see the cut lines but save yourself tears. #winning

We tried a plastic needle and a darning needle – both worked but obviously, the metal needle went through the paper more easily. I ended up making a hole to make it easier for her to thread and so she didn’t rip the copy paper.

She alternated putting on flower, leaves, and straw until it was long enough to form a lei. Tip: don’t put the flowers all around – we ripped some off the end so it would sit flat on her neck.

Other Paper Flower Lei Crafts

We also used the light green copy paper and made these paper Monstera leaves because I love them. And, hey, I have to sit through this movie again so I’m getting Monstera leaves.

If your kiddos are too young to cut (or you don’t have the patience to help them cut the flowers), you could try this cupcake liner lei tutorial from Create Craft Love.

Pop on over to Amazon to pick up these flower cupcake liners or just buy these leis and leave the crafting to someone else.

Over to You

This was suprisingly easy for the little one to do. She mentioned, “not all of the flowers were perfect,” but I think that’s just fine.

  1. So adorable! please update your links to the flower template, they don’t go to a wedding store that has no “flower template”. so adorable, if i had time to free hand and replicate yours I would!

  2. How cute is this?! I don’t know about making them by hand … I’d definitely prefer buying them and being done (yes, I’m kinda lazy) LOL

  3. OK, this seriously is the perfect craft to make to watch Moana as a family movie night. Pinned and will be making with my kids to hopefully have a Mona movie night here soon now :)
