Confectionery Chaos: Volkswagen Bus Cookies

“Well, would you look at that! Che’ Sugar begins to lead the powdered confection masses right on out of the mixing bowl!”

Yep, I’ve said that this week.

Aloud. Alone in my kitchen. And I was smiling. And then… I was laughing.

As mentioned previously:

  • my “something new” this year is cookie decorating.
  • in order to show some neighborly love, I was going to attempt something far beyond the reaches of my existing ability. Like light-years kind of far, people.
  • I was apprehensive but hopeful.
Wow, oh wow. It’s kind of labor-intensive, this whole cookie decorating thing. Starting at the Cookie Decorating 101 beginner’s level is hard. And slow.

The icing has to be “juuuuust right” or it revolts! That was the exact thought that went through my brain before I uttered: “Well, would you look at that! Che’ Sugar begins to lead the powdered confection masses right on out of the mixing bowl.”

I have gotten the consistency into that magical “just right” happy place once or twice. Ah, the good times.

The bad times? Oh, that’s when it’s best to just call the thing and rinse it all down the drain. Frustrating? Yes.

Even though I’m not quite making the consistency I want every time, I am still having fun. Oh don’t get me wrong, the fun is idling right there next to the frustration, but it’s there.

Fun and frustration: that combo is what makes a good hobby.

What makes it doubly-awesome is that Jeff is getting to laugh a lot when I ask him for his opinion! He really is trying to be supportive, but when he looks at a cookie and says, “is that a stick figure guy shooting a gun?” it’s not very helpful.

Not helpful at all, but it sure makes me take a step back and laugh, too.

Our neighbor has a Volkswagen (VW) bus that is very well loved and cared for. Their two year old’s birthday party was Saturday and ever since I saw them on IAmBaker, I knew I had to either make these cookies or have them made for Ozzie.

So I tried.

And no, I did not get them right.

But I got them right enough for my second week of beginner cookie decorating.

The sugar cookie recipe is +Sweetopia‘s and I use royal icing. It’s quite well-named in fact, because it can be a royal pain in…

I’ll keep working on it.

Sadly, now being as sick as I am, I didn’t get to deliver them myself.

~insert sad face here~

~add a dash of grown-up pouting~

~moving on~

I didn’t think it’d be a great idea to go and possibly infect a throng of two year olds and their folks, so I sent Jeff and Elise on without me. Apparently, they were quite well-received.
