Each year, I focus on distracting challenging myself with a new hobby. My “something new.”
Some I get into and dislike. Some I get into and get distracted by something shiny. Some I keep.
I like cookies. I like being crafty. Cookie decorating might be the winner for 2014!
I do like to challenge myself every year with “something new.” I even like the searching for and selecting the ‘something new.’
My “something new” is supposed to be a direction I can take my mind to help me relax but still have something to show for my time… Yep, that’s my Type-A personality shining through there.
As part of some friends’ Christmas presents this year, my sister and I made cookies. I already had a TON of food crafting stuff from when my “something new” was cake decorating.
I would love to document some of my old cake creations here, but I have absolutely no idea where my external hard drive is that houses those pictures. If it should ever be discovered in one of the 200 or so moving boxes that we haven’t unpacked yet, I’ll be sure to share.
The little sister came over after I baked and prepped some of the sugar cookies using a recipe from +Sweetopia and we had some fun coming up with some cookies. Even though there was no wine, or even food for that matter, it was fun and apparent how one could get better with practice. A whole lot of practice in my case.
Some cookies I made are below. Only some, I promise.
Wait. Before the cookies, an apology.
I apologize. I am not a photographer. I use my iPhone for almost every photo or video we have, simply because it’s handy. So again, my apologies. If you squint and shake your head back and forth, some of them look kind of like a photograph of something.
This one is supposed to be a modern candy cane cookie for those who are crazy not as fond of the sugary goodness of icing as I am.
I didn’t space the lines well, but I cannot believe how well the blue dots came out.
They actually look like circles!
Ignore the yellow ones. They don’t look like circles.
For all intents and purposes, I consider myself a Texan. I was born in New York, but I lived all of my formative years in The Lone Star State, and I look lovingly back on all of the time I spent there.
I do not spend hours picking the splinters from my backside pining away over having to hold my breath while outside, in the hopes that my lungs don’t catch on fire during the scorching, summer heat. But I miss darn near everything else.
I know, I know.
Isn’t this the saddest little thing I could have possibly created? I was attempting a kind of tufted design I had seen somewhere, but I did NOT have the patience for this one.
I am only documenting this so that I can try it again after I learn patience (hahahaha) or after I practice a boat load (a bit more realistic).
I intended on doing something more with this one, like a “Peace” message, but I didn’t have the confidence in my lettering skills and we needed the cookie count. ~wink~
I love round cookies, but I seriously need to work on my consistency in getting an icing circle EVEN.
I had to prop the cookie on a toothpick to make sure that the icing didn’t slide right on off one side. It was touch-and-go for a bit… I know, you were on the edge of your seat.
I loved this cookie.
Until I tried to flood it with a light blue (hello, Tiffany box anyone?).
The blue icing conquered the rest of the cookie. It took no prisoners, let me tell ya.
So I had to eat it. I just had to. I was doing everyone a great service.
The last one I will bore you with document here is my first attempt at a snow globe.
I had a good idea.
I even had good intentions.
I had poor execution.
And that was before I accidentally stabbed the snowman with a toothpick.
But I did say I was sorry.
I’m not sure how long this foray into beginner cookie decorating will last, or even if I will come up with a new “something new” next week.
I am working on a design from I Am Baker’s rainbow bus cookies for a friend of Elise’s who will be turning two soon. I have no idea what I’m doing, but I will give it my best and hope for the rest!
Let me know in the comments section if you get a new hobby each year or think it’s crazy. Oh, and if you are into cookie decorating, leave me some tips and your contact information so I can pick your brain! Ha ha
Happy day to you all!
